Today I am going to share with you a really popular chair makeover - where I transformed a boring and dated captains chair into something beautiful!
This project received so much love and attention and I had a very happy client who got emotional when she saw the transformation!

Below is a before picture of the captains chair which originally belonged to my clients grandmother and they were using it as an office chair. After lots of renovation work my clients home is now absolutely stunning - imagine lots of dreamy neutrals, limed floors, crittle doors and the most gorgeous puppy bounding around! The existing dark wood and fabric of the captains chair no longer suited their new neutral aesthetic and as the chair had sentimental value to my client, the only way forward was to transform it and make it work with the rest of the home!

The chair was still going to be used at a desk in the main dining room and so it was important for the fabric and paint work to be durable and long lasting as well as the chair looking beautiful.

Previous display cabinet project for the same client

I had already transformed the display cabinet above which also sits in this clients dining room, so it was decided the paint work on the chair was to match! After looking through fabric samples my client opted for a ‘snow’ coloured vegan leather, finished with antique brass style studs. The fabric she chose has a high rub count and we were advised that it would be a suitable option for her.

After, transformation of the captains chair

For the reupholstering of the chair I used a fantastic local fabric upholsterer named Olly, from Greys Furnishings in Tarring, Worthing! His work is always beautiful and his showroom full of stunning pieces of furniture, so it was no surprise when I collected the chair after he had reupholstered it that I was blown away by how great the fabric looked and how beautifully it went with the paint work!

We opted for studs that weren’t too bright but had a hint of gold to match the gilded paint work

How to create this paint effect
To create the dreamy neutral and gold paintwork effect I first painted 3 coats of Fusion Mineral Paint, ‘Champlain’. I then dry brushed several layers of other lighter colour neutrals for a blended look then used a gold wash over the top of this, (Fusion ‘Metallic Gold’ mixed with water). As Amazon do not sell this exact product I have link a similar one for you here - that will achieve the same look! Once dry I brushed on some gold gilding wax to highlight certain points and details of the wood work.
